High school students

UCSC summer session courses are a great way to move beyond the limits (nerdy pun) of your high school math courses and get an early start on your college-level coursework.

Getting the right fit

UCSC uses the online preparation and placement system ALEKS to assess students' current math skills and knowledge. If you aren't an incoming UCSC frosh or continuing UCSC student, you can assess in ALEKS in two ways:

  • You can complete a free trial assessment. The free assessment is limited to three hours, which is ample time for most students.
  • You can purchase an ALEKS subscription. The minimum subscription period is one month, at a cost of $19.95, and includes use of a customized ALEKS self-study Learning Module.

Please read about ALEKS before beginning your placement assessment. ALEKS assessments are probably very different from other math tests you've taken, so a quick look through the assessment tips and FAQs can help you to get the most accurate placement.

After you've completed your assessment, send your ALEKS report to summers@ucsc.edu.

The process described above is valid only for non-UCSC students enrolling in Summer Session courses. Matriculated UCSC students needing Math Placement should access ALEKS using their UCSC Gold CruzID.
